If he succeeds, the Germans could win the war. Werner Heisenberg, who won the Nobel Prize in 1932 for pioneering quantum physics, is now in charge of the Nazis’ attempts to create an atom bomb. The Office of Strategic Services Chief to whom he presents the film is impressed by Berg’s enterprise, as well as the extensive language skills that Berg has picked up at Princeton and elsewhere, and Berg is hired. On a goodwill baseball exhibition tour of Japan, Berg sneaks onto the roof of a Tokyo hospital to covertly film Tokyo's harbor and Navy shipyards.

In 1936, Berg is playing for the Boston Red Sox near the end of a long if undistinguished pro career. Moe Berg, a 15-year baseball veteran, joins the war effort as a spy to beat Nazi Germany in the race to build the first atomic bomb. The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, and was released on June 22, 2018, by IFC Films. Mark Strong, Sienna Miller, Jeff Daniels, Tom Wilkinson, Giancarlo Giannini, Hiroyuki Sanada, Guy Pearce, and Paul Giamatti also star. It stars Paul Rudd as Moe Berg, a former baseball player who joined the war effort during World War II and participated in espionage for the U.S. This complex, poignant movie is actually quite subversive, since it forces you to realize that baseball is a thinking man's game and that athletes (and their working class fans) are not nearly as stupid as the real simpletons who write for the NEW YORKER.The Catcher Was a Spy is a 2018 American war film directed by Ben Lewin and written by Robert Rodat, based on the book of the same name by Nicholas Dawidoff. But athletes should be jolly, ape like simpletons, the kind who know their place. I remember one frightfully cultured fellow at the NEW YORKER sniffing that Costner's character is "arrogant." Note well that if an artist or an intellectual is cold and demanding, it's okay. Just the way Chapel's team mates set him up for the perfect game! This movie wasn't that well received by the critics. They really set Costner up for an unusually mature, disciplined performance. Reilly as the catcher, Kelly Preston as the girl friend, and Jena Malone as the girl friend's adorable teenage daughter - are very much the stars. It's no exaggeration to say that the supporting cast in this film - John C. But he always surrounds himself with people who are strong enough to challenge him and help him stay grounded. In the romantic drama, Kevin Costner does much more than play the usual Costner "nice guy." Billy Chapel can be cold, egocentric, and difficult - just like any other creative artist. At the same time, not all the action is on the baseball diamond.
The only reason that pitching the perfect game matters to him is purely for the perfection of his art - for the love of the game. Kevin Costner's character, Billy Chapel, is not a "sports underdog." It's very clear he is a great athlete who has had a great career, and that he can walk away at any time with lots of money and lots of respect. But what I loved most about this movie is that there are no clichés. It therefore combines the tension of a thriller with the poignant emotions of an elegy.
Part of it is the tight, real-time structure - the whole movie takes place in a man's head while he pitches a perfect baseball game on the mound. Yet this movie just captivates me every time I watch it. Why do I love this movie so much? I'm not a baseball fan.
